Do you use Yahoo! mail ?

Recently, while blogging and commenting about Yahoo and Google, I found that I do not have much information, on Yahoo! mail.

Even though I started off with Yahoo! mail, I switched to Gmail  soon after that and stopped using Yahoo! mail. I tried the Yahoo! mail beta, but it was loading quiet slow and I left it there.

Thats my experience. However, after talking to a few people here, like Ruhi,  I feel that I missed something during my Yahoo! mail days.

So here I am, looking for all Yahoo! mail fans out there, asking you to share your experience with me. I do not want to be biased, while writing about Gmail and Yahoo! mail because I do not have much information about Yahoo! email.

If you had chance to look closer at Yahoo! email, please post your experience here, good or bad , anything !!

    I’ve used both Yahoo! Mail and Gmail. Though I find Yahoo’s new techy and sleek version rather annoying because it’s slow, the simple version is good enough. I’ve never been boggled much by the ad’s like it happens on Hotmail. However I’m totally on Gmail now, simply because it’s more convenient.

    Thank you Ish,

    Yahoo! Mail Beta, was really slow, I didn’t try it after it came out of the bet status though. Was there any significant change to that ?

  3. Ruhi

    Dinsan,

    thanks for the pingback. :) Yahoo beta version is quite slow…like you said. But they’ve tried to make an in built chat window (like gmail). But I use the older version for blogging purposes, because it has no storage; so i can let all the comment notifications and stuff come there and not worry about deleting. So in case something in my blog goes wrong, i can check my inbox and get the backup.

    I don’t like GMail much, to tell you the truth. It’s too plain looking for my taste.

  4. Ish

    @Dinsan: Nope, I find the new Yahoo! Mail still slow and overloaded with features. The preview window was a neat thing to do but not when it takes a good enough time to load. You’ve got to keep in consideration that you might need to access an e-mail account from anywhere and that new version will totally kill a dial up connection. The older version though, is good enough as I earlier said.

    @Ruhi: Even AOL has started that chat in the browser window thing so it’s not a GMail feature. I’ve never used this feature much even in GMail actually. But then it’s your own choice, I’m a fan of plain and simple looking layouts and by that standards GMail is good. Plus it’s easier to work with labels.

    @ Ruhi…

    Like Ish said, its all your taste… as far as my taste goes, mail is something that I want to see in plain layout… because, for email most of the times, text is important or rather, only text is important.. and about gmail, I think you do not have much complaints either.. other than that signature thing..

    @ Ish

    Thanks for the info.. yes, such slow stuff can kill a dial up connection… and there to simplicity matters..

  6. Ruhi

    @Ish

    Oh is it? Yeah, i don’t use Gtalk actually…in fact, I hardly use any of the chat softwares. It’s a waste of time.

    @Dinsan

    Yes, it’s a very personal preference. That’s why there is no point comparing. Both the services have their own pros and cons. GMail is very good, I agree, except for the signature thingy.

  7. dinsan

    @ Ruhi…

    Comparison is good for those who are yet to make a decision.. or those who want to know more about the one which they are using.. right ? it also tells us whats missing here.. and what can be added here.. comparing it with “there”

    @Dinsan: I’m going a bit off topic really but I wanted to give you a suggestion. It’s completely on you if you want to accept it or ignore it I don’t think an advertisement below the post of the title is such a good idea. The one in the sidebar is okay. I believe that content and advertisements should have their own separate places and content should always be highlighted. That’s just my view though.

    @Ruhi: What signature thingy in GMail?

  9. dinsan

    @ Ish

    If you have noticed, I am always experimenting with themes and ads. I try different styles, and different colors etc, just to learn more and more… its learning for my job… most of the times.. ( I work for as support analyst for webhosting companies ).. what you see now, will not continue like that for long time, I am sure ;) … you should see more and more changes soon.. thank u so much for letting me know how it looks like.. will expect more from you on the go.. thanks again

    @Ish

    Actually, I know that ad right on top of the post doesn’t look good…ut if you read Adsense, they recommend that as one of the “hot areas” to put ads in…because readers first look at the title. So there is a higher chance for these ads to be viewed and clicked upon.

    @All

    But…anyway…I wouldn’t use text ads because people are more attracted by images, so image ads will do better…And Google Adsense mentions that ads without any border does better than ads with borders…Just a suggestion though :)

  11. dinsan

    @ Ruhi

    You are right, that is a hot spot indeed :) ( but dont think I am making a lot with this.. I am yet to receive the first check. Image ads are good, to get people attracted.. but it affects the important of the content.. distractions.. and from my experience, text ads pays better per count than image ads :)
    @ Ish

    I think you will be disappointed looking at where ads are placed now. :( .. I was trying something else.. but couldn’t figure out how … and ended up like this. What I wanted to do is, align the entire blog to left ( theme has that option that part is fine ) and then put ads on the right side..

  12. Ish

    @Ruhi: Yes, I figured it was a good spot to get the ad noticed. People might even click the ad by mistake while trying to click the title of the post. But this is what I’m not a fan of. That ad is actually distracting and stealing away the limelight from your content which in my opinion is the most important thing. If it’s not making me a fortune, I wouldn’t be interested in putting it there.

    @Dinsan: Ah yes, I know you keep experimenting with the look but I didn’t know it was job related. I was just giving a casual suggestion. This kind of ad’s would work well on a normal website but I don’t think they should have the limelight on a blog, especially not on a personal one. If it’s a professional blog like we have the ones which tell about technology and all, then such ad’s are good. But then, I’m an ad-hater so my views can be different from those who see them as a source of alternate income.

    And I’m not disappointed with the ad’s placement now. It’s actually much better than before. Earlier it was after the post title and that is what was causing the problem. It made one feel like you have to look at the ad first and read the post afterwards. Now once you read the title of the post, there’s no distraction till the end so it works fine for me.

    @ Ish

    Thanks for reviewing the site in a very good manner :) ( I am not kidding ) .. its really nice to see comments like this, coz I spend so much time on this.. the time that I spend here experimenting helps when I find customers who have issues with wordpress blogs !!

    Glad to know that this ad placement is ok with you ad haters ;) its a good spot and no browsing difficulties too.. ( I believe )

    Even if you hate ads, they are here to stay.. the industry is moving in that direction, and it cant move backwards…

  14. Ish

    Oh you’re always welcome. Reviewing blogs is my passion, I just don’t have the kind of time one needs for it right now.

    And yeah, as much as I may hate them, ad’s are here to stay, and increase if nothing else. But they’re okay if placed in a sensible manner you know.

  15. Poonam

    For me, GMail wins hands down over yahoo.

    I have two yahoo accounts, use them rarely. One GMail account is good enough for me. I use only GMail integrated chat and no other chat. It served in good stead coincidentally, at work, all yahoo messenger users got killer.exe virus. I was saved.

    Also, yahoo is not only slow it has pathetic spam service.

  16. Ruhi

    @Dinsan

    Have you tried Adsense optimization themes that are available? Then you don’t have to worry too much about coding and all…they leae space for the ads in the right spots. So you need to tweak less. :)
    And yes, you’re right…Google makes all its money from Ads…it’s a big business now.

    @Poonam

    Oh yeah! I forgot about that- Yahoo’s spam system totally sucks. I’m sick of deleting spam from my inbox.

  17. dinsan

    @ Ish

    You had posted about upcoming blog reviews.. I submitted mine too.. nothing happened :(
    @ Poonam

    Welcome aboard.. another gmail fan :) Yahoo and Spam.. yes, thanks for reminding me about that :) … its a hugeeee point .. no one can dis agree… :)

  18. Poonam

    @dinsan: Chalo, buy me a beer for reminding it then. ;)
    @All: Off topic, but I guess I want to know your opinion.

    Frankly, guys what do you think of people who ask for donations on their blog? (see my answer to dinsan above)

  19. Ish

    @Dinsan: Yeah, I was planning to do reviews but had to give up on that because I didn’t have enough time. It was badly timed. Once I’m done with the 12th grade, maybe I’ll start doing them again.

    @Poonam: Well, I don’t really mind people who ask for donations in their blogs but it does depend on the way they asked for it.

    But I absolutely despise those PPP kind of blogs in which you have to pay before reading the complete blog. That’s disgusting. Why should I pay when I don’t have a clue what’s coming next? But it’s okay if I like your content and I feel like you deserve to go forward and I donate. They’re two completely different things.

  20. dinsan

    @ Poonam

    Personal blog and Donation ? No way.. its damn bad.. but if you have a blog with a “service” some information on certain stuff etc etc ( like tech review sites ) , yes you can ask for donation otherwise, no no ……….

  21. Nita

    Came here from Ruhi’s blog. Found this post interesting and the comments as well.
    I have one yahoo mail and 2 gmails. I use both gmail and yahoo equally. I personally like the look of yahoo and the usability of gmail.

  22. dinsan

    @ Nita…

    thank u for visiting my blog and commenting :) You should see a comment on your blog now, from me.. actually its not because u commented here.. i found your blog from Ruhi’s blog itself.. and I was commenting there.. coz I found something related to economics ;) …… just when I finished commenting there, I found your comment awaiting moderation.. pretty nice co -incidence ?

    thanks again.. we should thank Ruhi too right ? …

  23. Nita

    This is indeed a strange coincidence. I love coincidences and yes I guess we have to thank Ruhi! :) This type of comment coincidence hasn’t happened to me before!

  24. dinsan

    @ Nita

    Yes !! Thanks Ruhi… hope she reads this one ;)

  25. Poonam

    I like the font of this theme, Georgia.

    @ish and dinsan: I find it very hard to come to terms with asking for donation for a going blog. Perhaps because I blog as a hobby and don’t like to see it as money-making venture. Its an inexplicable feeling that I don’t like even good blogs asking for money in their blogs. It is my choice to blog or work full-time. Why should I ask readers for money to sustain it?

  26. Nita

    Poonam I too feel uncomfortable about asking for money. Some people have advised me to do so. I guess whether to ask for money or not depends a great deal on the person, the level of comfort one feels. If one feel comfortable asking and another feels comfortable giving, it’s their business. But one has to keep in mind that some readers will surely get put off.

  27. dinsan

    @ Poonam and Nita

    What you think about putting ads on blogs ?

  28. Nita

    You have asked a question which I want to know the answer to! There is a party which is asking me to crosspost in another blog on their site and I will get 50 percent of the ad revenue. Actually it depends on the purpose of the blog and I never wanted ads from the beginning. But so many people are trying to persuade me, I am now undecided.
    I personally as a reader get distracted if there are too many ads on a blog and frankly I never click on the ads! So I keep thinking most people are like me and no one will click, but do I even want ads? I cannot decide! What do you think?

  29. dinsan

    @ Nita

    First things first.. if u want to put ads, set up your own site, and then put ads on your own.. dont go for that 50% deal.. its not tough to put ads on a site..

    Back to your question I would say, If you can justify your ads, to yourself.. put it on .. no issues. Not because others asked to do so, but if you want to have ads on your site… and think about a little income..

    Ads won’t distract users, if you dont want to distract them. There are sites where ads distract people.. but there are sites where you keep minimum of ads, and as Ish said, on its own place… so it wont harm the user.. I try to avoid image ads.. even though I sometimes experiment with them…

  30. Nita

    Thanks for answering that Dinsan! Actually the question of a site on my own is something I have thought of (with Ruhi writing so much about it!) but changed my mind as I am zero tech savvy. I simply don’t want to venture into it! And nor do I want to spend!
    Maybe one of these days I will be ready.
    But what you say about the ads is true. One needs to be moderate. Why don’t you blog about your experience with ads?

  31. dinsan

    @ Nita

    Thank you for that tip.. blogging about ads.. its good.. I will do that for sure.. but I just started this.. so my experience is limited… and there are tonnes of sites about ads and adsense.. but i will put my adsense experience one day..

    If I had to spend for webhosting, I think .. I will not go for self hosted wordpress…… but since this is my staff account, and I just had to register the domain… its just fine :)
