Create a Private Community on Orkut

February 8th, 2008 · 26 Comments · google

Little more privacy added to Orkut. Now, you can have private communities too. How is it going to be useful ? I think this post has it.

Have you ever thought of creating a community poll like “Who is the best teacher at your school?”, but stopped yourself from doing it because the teachers might actually see it? Or perhaps you wanted to create a community to keep in touch with family, but didn’t want to share your family events and posts with the

whole orkut community? While communities are a great place to meet new people who share your interests, we understand that the current structure of communities sometimes makes it difficult to have intimate discussions with a select group of people. We hope that the introduction of private communities will fill this need.

Well Said !!

So, if you are owner of a community in orkut, its time for you to decide if you want to let others watch your content or not to. Cracks for opening the content even if it is private ? If the owner of the community has put auto approval of membership ( without having to wait for his approval for someone to be a member of the community ), I would join the community, read whatever I want, post whatever I want, and then unjoin. So, thats the crack to view the private content. But if community membership is monitored, this will not work. But wait, people will soon come out with cracks.

I like orkut for many reasons….since its moslty used by south asians…i hv had many chances to find even my childhood friends..but on the other hand…there is too many spams and hackers out there…they need to be more like facebook…i hv never had a junk msg or wall post or anything like tht in facebook….but I am sure orkut is getting there…

true. it should be very flexible with the members involved and still restrain the non-members. it also can be implied that stuff posted on the community should pertain to it.

why do one need orkut for this? why can’t one have a google group or a yahoo group?
I always thought orkur/facebook etc were not net social networking. but looks like everyone is doing everything. No USP anymore!

    Hi…..Thats a cool feature…

Orkut has helped me find me friends with whom i had no touch in last 5-6 years thru orkut we had a reunion in December 2006 but some how I and most of friends have lost our interest in orkut….we hardly visit orkut nowadays.

Anyways for those who are still in orkut….its a good option to have.

I read today that you can never delete your account on facebook. it gave me the creeps. good I never joined that place. I recently deleted my orkut account as well.
I prefer to communicate with people via blogs!

But don’t you think there is something more to relations other than commenting on blogs ? ( I am not arguing that there is so much of good relations happening on social networking, but still )

Ofcourse Dinsan! Real Life relationships! I have plenty of those and find it difficult to do this social networking thing. Maybe it’s a generation gap, I don’t know, but I don’t feel comfortable. I am very comfortable with the internet, and blogging, but now making friends with people through social networking sites.
With blogs the difference is that you are always discussing some ideas, there is always an intellectual element to the discussion and that is great way to network. That’s why I prefer blog networking to orkut/facebook networking. I know you will say it can be same in orkut/facebook but I don’t think so. I have seen those things up close.

Its simple.. on Socialnetworking sites, you will need to share personal information, not on blogs.. this is exchange of ideas.. :)
