Job , Dream and Job
I was talking to a friend of mine. She was really happy about her new job and she was sharing her experience with me.
Past
Both of us wanted to be Journalists, when we were on school. We used to discuss everything possible about that career, on our way to school, during our breaks and whenever we get time.
Present
She is a Journalist for a leading Malayalam daily. I am in to Customer Service, technical support etc ……
It was a strange feeling when I heard her talking happily about her job and friends…
I was happy for her, but at the same time, I was feeling something else inside me. I had to take a different route because of many reasons. I know I have done few things, that I should be happy about. But still ….
I know my decision to take up this career was correct and I have no problem with it. I know that I can still learn Journalism and start working for Media, if I want to. I know I can do freelancing too. But, the reason behind this post is my curiosity …
Question
Are you doing a job that you wanted to do ? Something that you planned and tried to get in to during your studies ? Are you happy with it ?

I got the job what i wanted. not exactly the kind of i needed. but it was something to do with IT and computers
When I was young, I wanted to be something different than what I am now.. however, I do not regret anything.. as I totally love my work!!
For me as long as the job brings in the moolah that lets me invest in the stock market, its ok. I hate the IT field, yet am here, still in the industry for the past 11 years.
Have been wanting to make a move to the finance field for past few months, but nothing seems to work out. Lets c.

If that’s so, you are lucky… like old people say.. everything is for good ( there is a saying like that right ? )
@ Philip

@ Rekha
I don’t know what to suggest you.
tastes chances and future.. they are all confusing…
Being a journalist in real life I know one thing for sure.. You don’t need to ‘learn’ journalism all you have to learn/know is the language… rest of the work is building contacts (in case one is in reporting) and maintaining them! So you can still be one!
To be honest I wanted to be in advertising, but I don’t regret the way things are working out I can freelance in advertising when I really feel like doing it… I guess
(Did you try freelancing for newspapers? Good idea for a starter)
@ Balu
thanks for the support … hmm I am planning to do freelancing.. but have no contact…atm… lets see.. will update ya all..
@Dinsan
Yeah..confusion…concentration of fusion
A question I ask myself every day…
I miss print, but mainly just because broadcast is so complicated sometimes. With print, you could write hundreds of words and include all kinds of quotes, shoot a few pictures and be done. Broadcast has a lot more to do: shooting video, editting video, writing super short scripts that are between 30 seconds and 2 minutes (it’s so short!), projecting your voice correctly. It’s really time consuming too. I’m getting the hang of it, and don’t get me wrong, I love it. There are just days when I miss print and I doubt whether I’m in the right field or not.
The great thing about broadcast is that I can move from tv to print media fairly easy. I’m keeping my hand in print (just got a position on the university newspaper staff). So hopefully I can do both…because I enjoy both.
