Self Hosted WordPress Blogs – how easy is it ?

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Yes !! another question for you. Is it easy to set up and manage a self hosted wordpress blog ? Or, is it a difficult job ?

My experience ?

Installing a new wordpress blog : 2 to 5 minutes.
Uploading a theme and making changes : 10 minutes
Uploading basic plugins and activating them : 5 minutes

Yes, setting up a new wordpress blog, including installation, theme, and plugins, -  30 minutes maximum. Well, this is after you get your hosting account activated. So, after you sign up for a hosting account, you will have to wait to get it activated. Sometimes it will be done within 30 minutes or less. If there is any issue with your payment, it may take little more longer, depending up on the kind of issue.

After you sign up, there is something called “DNS propagation”, which may take 24 to 72 hours. Once this is  done, ie – an active account, and DNS propagation completed, you are almost done. Because, as I told you, installation and set up will need only less than 30 minutes.

So -

How will you register a domain name ?
How will you find a good webhost ?
How will you install wordpress on the new account ?
How will you find a good theme ?
Where will you upload your themes and plugins ?
How will you edit themes ?
How will you add adsense to the blog ?
How will you add ads to your RSS feeds ?

More questions ?  Stay tuned  ….

And how much does it cost every year? I got an CSS upgrade today and I could not find many good options as far as that is concerned. Can you also throw some light on that. I am having a feeling that a CSS upgrade is nothing but tampering with the colour combinations of your blog. :(

@ Amit

hmm css is all about the design of the blog. Search for good css templates and try them :) hmm you can also try copying css code from normal wordpress themes … ( meant for selfhosted blogs )

cost ? hmm depends … will let you all know after I do some search .. ok ?

I am now a days playing with Self hosted WP. Just for fun BTW.
Nice tips, keep going.

Hey. Eureka.
For the people who are interested, why dont you write a post on installing WP locally on your computer? That way we can test themes locally before uploading and save all hassle. Also we can just edit theme locally and upload it when its ready. SO we will not trouble our visitors.

Just in case you don’t know, clue is *Instant Rails*
Or add me to GTalk with id I have used for this comment, I will tell you my experience. :)
