Windows XP should be the most common operating system used in India… right ? .. but we never pay for it .. great !!
When I went to the laptop store of “X” brand, they said they will get pirated XP installed on it if I buy from there. hmm pretty good offer .. So that’s how things are. Most of us use pirated operating systems. We laugh at people if they say they paid for the operating system. But, we seldom opt for free softwares or operating systems. Paying for the OS while purchasing a laptop makes us feel bad .. ( I agree, most them offer windows vista with it, and its a pain …. )
But, why are not using or promoting free operating systems enough ? There are tonnes of Linux distributions available, and there are even government agencies using them, ( yes, I was surprised to see Ubuntu at the Electricity Board Offices in Kerala. ) but still, Linux stays away from the mass … or, kept away from them ?.

So, question for you ..do you use Linux ? May be, at times, if not completely ? Have you ever tried it ? Do yo think it is tough to learn ? If given a chance, with good training and support, will you be interested in learning and using Linux ?
Is Encouraging children to use Linux a good idea ?

ഒന്നമത്തെ കാര്യം, free softwares അര്ത്ഥമാക്കുന്നത് സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യത്തെയാണ്, സൗജന്യത്ടെയല്ല. ഈ പോസ്റ്റ് അങ്ങനെയൊരു തെറ്റിധാരണയ്ക്ക് ആക്കം കൂട്ടുന്നില്ലേ എന്നൊരു സംശയമില്ലാതില്ല. (ഈ പോസ്റ്റിലെ കമന്റുകള് വായിച്ചാല് മനസ്സിലാകും free വരുത്തി വെച്ച തെറ്റിധാരണയുടെ ആഴം)
സ്വതന്ത്ര സോഫ്റ്റ്വെയറുകള് നാം പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കേണ്ടത് തന്നെയാണ്. ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ കേരള ഗവണ്മെന്റ് ഇക്കാര്യത്തില് ഇന്ത്യയ്ക്കും ലോകത്തിനുമൊക്കെ ഒരു മാതൃകയാണ്. ഇലക്ട്രിസിറ്റി ഓഫീസില് മാത്രമല്ല, ഖാദി ബോര്ഡും സ്വതന്ത്ര സോഫ്റ്റ്വെയറുകളെ സ്വീകരിച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞു.
ഞാന് ഒന്നൊന്നര വര്ഷമായി പൂര്ണ്ണമായും സ്വതന്ത്ര സോഫ്റ്റ്വെയറിലാണ് പണിയെടുക്കുന്നത്. വീട്ടിലെ സിസ്റ്റത്തില് ഗ്നു/ലിനക്സിലാണ് അച്ഛനും അമ്മയും അനിയത്തിയുമൊക്കെ കമ്പ്യൂട്ടിങ്ങ് നടത്തുന്നത്. അനിയത്തിക്ക് ഒഴിച്ച് ബാക്കി രണ്ട് പേര്ക്കും കമ്പ്യൂട്ടിങ്ങിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാന വിവരങ്ങളൊന്നും തന്നെ ഇല്ലായിരുന്നു എന്ന് കൂടി പറയട്ടെ.

I guess Linux is gaining momentum, but it is still a long distance from becoming mainstream.
People know Windows, and they know windows applications. That’s a big motivation to play safe and stick to Windows.

Use it all the time on my Eee and dual boot on my home PC with Vista and Ubuntu. I feel nix systems have not gained a decent market share is because of driver compatibility and relatively steep learning curve (when it comes to customizing)
Ubuntu has a really great repository universe but you still need to read through tons of forum posts to make it work on your hardware.
FYI Vista is not bad at all – I’ve been using it for 2 years now and it has never BSOD’d on me. WIn 7 is even better (runs faster on my Eee than Ubuntu)

may be it will bring the market back to MS ..
hopefully .. and they are making it compatible with Netbooks too … so, the scope has increased … Linux has less acceptance among general public, and there have been incidents where people returned Linux based Netbooks and bought Windows Netbook .. and Apple is yet to make a Netbook ..
