Why I don’t like clicking the “Previous Entries” link on your blog.

Few days back, I reached Chirag’s blog looking for one of his old blog posts. I wanted to add a link to that from my new post. But, his blog had no search box, and categories widget was missing from the sidebar. I had to click “Previous Entries” link a few times, and browse through all those pages to reach the article that I was looking for.

I remember reading very good article from this blog and here is the point that attracted me the most.

The only way to browse your blog is by date and category. This goes back to the first reason. You know what your best posts are…list them! I want to see the best content a blog has to offer the first time I visit it. Make it easy for people to find the best posts you’ve ever written.

Simple. Check your sidebar now, and make sure you have the search widget, and categories widget in place. !! List most popular posts of your blog.  Good luck !

i think a google search based on the contents and the name of the blog also throws up the link to the post.

I try it out sometimes when iam searching for something on my blog too. Eventhough there is a search tab on my blog too. Still … ;)

I have both the search box and categories widget not to mention tags which can take you to the appropriate subjec and also most popular post widget. But I would very much like to add a widget with blogs I would love to highlight for others. How to go about that??

for highlighting blogs .. ? hm you mean a blogroll ?
or if you want to post links to certain posts that you like, you can use ” Google Reader Shared Items” on your sidebar, which of course possible only if you are using Google Reader for feeds.

Or, you can add RSS feed widgets too …

if you meant something else, let me know ..

Yes, “site:domain.com keyword ” that works.
google custom search engine works way better than wordpress search :)

Okay, to show certain old posts .. you can create a list of them using html, and put it on your sidebar as a widget or insert the code directly to sidebar.php. ( email me if you need help with this :) )

yes, those posts you mark “share” on google reader will appear in this list http://www.google.com/help/reader/sharing.html

I dont have a category widget but I do think that a search option is necessary.

yes, search is a must .. and if you have categories widget, it will give a new visitor an option to browse more and also find out topics covered by the blog.

Yes i too have noticed over time that having a search box is quite important.

Having a favorite posts list is also a good idea…good for new visitors to your blog, like you said.

hmm “follow comments” means ? are you asking about this feature ? displaying last post of the comment owner ?

#23
Nimmy on 03.10.09 at 11:16 am

I was reffering to this ” Notify me of followup comments via e-mail ” …I think its theme specific, isn’t it? and i think my theme doesn’t support it :(
