Is it okay to be a gay or Lesbian in India ?

Is it okay to be a gay or Lesbian in India ?

I never thought this would happen. But, now that it’s hear, it’s time to think “what now” ? I always listened to various discussions and debates on this topic, ( I think NDTV had a good show few months back ) read a lot of articles, and blogs … and still, I can’t be sure if I am against or for this gay thing, and I didn’t care … but now I should ..

Is it okay to be gay in India ? hmm legally yes ..( some what, unless govt is not planning another law against it, or making any changes in how that freedom is exercised here in India. )

But, when I think about this .. two of friends, boys, telling me that they are gay ? I can’t even imagine that.. I don’t know how it is like, to have gay or lesbian friends …. I never had such an experience, and I guess any of us never had, because even if any of our friends were gays, they will never tell us .. right?

For me, in single word, it sounds very disgusting. But, I can’t deny their rights if that is how nature has made them, so, I am in some what confused state, I am not against it, technically, but I am not for it either. This may change when I read, understand and contemplate more on this topic, and I may finally become totally against this …. I am not sure about this yet … and I have a feeling that many of us around here, are in the same situation ….

and the saddest thing …. in a society where even the word “sex” is considered weired, how will there be open discussions about this new system ?? anyone thought about that yet ?

I think you have summed up where most of young India is right now. Caught between this urge to stand by individual free right and choice..but kind of wary about whats to be done about our age old practices and all that goes under the name of ‘culture’ !

Hmm. You got me thinking !

I understand what you’re trying to say, but it’s mainly because you haven’t come across people who are gay/lesbian. I have met a few gay people and they are quite cool to hang out with. It’s not like they engage in sex in front of us. The problem — no offense intended — is with you. Why do you think of what they would be doing when they are alone in their room?
Another thing I have noticed is that among lesbian/gay couple it’s more about emotions that sex; from what I have see, read and understood. They understand each other much better than most couples do.

it’s tough for someone like me to think that way, may be because I don’t have any gay friends …

I am very very comfortable with what another person does in his own bedroom. It never was and it never will be my business.

@ sakhi

LOL !!

@ amit

I don’t mind what they do .. it’s not how it is, for a society as a whole .. if everyone starts thinking .. I don’t mind what others do, things won’t look good .. right ?

It will take time for the Indian society to adapt to the new ruling. Best thing is that it will take away the powers from the corrupt policemen who used to harass gays and try to extort money from them.

I do have gay and lesbian friends and trust me, unlike what they show in our movies, they are not the perverts they are shown to be.

Every citizen of this country has equal rights under the constitution of India. That’s what our founding fathers envisioned. The stupid law from the 1800s was nothing but a blot on a civilized society.

I believe we need to be saved more from the religious morons than from anyone else.

At a time where everyone seems to be raving about the judgement and supporting gay rights, its actually courageous to write frankly one’s opinion which doesnt like gays. I think its ok!! Each to his own.
