How to Make Linux for Popular : The next step.

I am  only  a Linux user, not an expert. I feel good to tell you that I am linux user. Because, when I look around, I see only linux geeks, or linux experts and very very less linux users.

Understanding Linux as a user

The open source theory is not my attraction. I use Linux because it is a good operating system and that’s the only reason.When I write about Linux, I am not  preaching freedom and open source or any of those theories…  but I am trying to tell you about a good operating system that I use.

My job introduced Linux to me as an operating system  that does almost everything that windows can do, and lot of things that Windows can not do. I used linux because I had to, and I did not leave Linux because I started loving it.

This will not happen very often. We do not have platforms where general public get introduced to Linux. Linux and most of the things related to it are shared within the Geek Communities around the Internet.

The next step, reach the common man

What Linux should do now, as early as possible, is to introduce Linux to the common man. This should happen online and offline. There is a great community of Linux users. They can easily do this, using their online and offline contacts.

Andriod Based Netbooks : A possibility ?

Android Netbook

Day Dreaming is my favorite hobby !!! Nice .. isn’t it ? and lately, my day dreams too turned geek. Android .. google and Netbooks. I started dreaming about these three, after reading so much about them.

But why should I read a lot about them ? What makes it interesting ?

1. Linux has become user friendly and powerful and it is ready for the use of common man. 2. Linux will be the best choice for Netbooks. 3. What Linux needs now is support from a Company which has mass acceptance, and Google is the best partner it can ever get.

So, when google and Linux join together, we need to expect something .. big …  reason ?.

Imagine you introduce Linux to a Windows user, and tell them this is Ubuntu, a Linux OS .. try this out … they may not do it .. and they will start complaining about it even if they start using it .. but  the desktop environment is pretty much the same. Now, introduce Google Docs to a MS Office user, and tell him/her that this is a Google Product.. they will like it.. sure, they will at least try it out for some time.

Taste some “WINE”

Hmm … thinking what I am up to ? okay, I had the same confusion when I found news  ” Wine 1.4 released” etc on digg.com. After that confusion, I read ….. WINE is an opensource project for Linux operating systems, which will help you run Windows applications on your Linux computer. Awesome !!

I did install WINE on my Linuxed laptop, and tried to install Chrome on it. However, it did not work since the Google Chrome file for this was not available for download for some reason. It gave me a “404 not found” error. But, I can use notepad and few other applications on Linux now.

I do not know much about WINE at the moment. However, I will try to use it more in coming days, and let you all know my experience. If you need more info on WINE,  jump to following pages.

Free software ? no, we need pirated !!

Windows XP should be the most common operating system used in India…  right ? .. but we never pay  for it ..  great !!

When I went to the laptop store of “X” brand, they said they will get pirated XP installed on it if I buy from there.  hmm pretty good offer ..  So that’s how things are. Most of us use pirated operating systems. We laugh at people if they say they paid for the operating system. But, we seldom opt for free softwares or operating systems. Paying for the OS while purchasing a laptop makes us feel bad .. ( I agree, most them offer windows vista with it, and its a pain …. )

Windows 7 is coming, so is Linux

Windows 7 is coming soon, and I have seen good feedback about it, so far .. ( beta release ).  Its better than Vista, and they are correcting their mistakes. But, interesting thing is, Windows 7 looks almost similar to KDE 4, ( latest release ) which is a Linux desktop environment. 

With netbooks getting popular, Linux is taking another step forward, because  they make netbooks even cheaper, and flexible. 

Universities, Schools and even government departments are moving towards Linux, and there is a lot happening in the open source community ….   and something like this too .

Okay, that’s about something I’ve been reading about for the past few weeks…  and you will see more posts about them here ..  let me know if you would like to taste some open source software blogging :)
