After that confusion, I read ….. WINE is an opensource project for Linux operating systems, which will help you run Windows applications on your Linux computer. Awesome !!

I did install WINE on my Linuxed laptop, and tried to install Chrome on it. However, it did not work since the Google Chrome file for this was not available for download for some reason. It gave me a “404 not found” error. But, I can use notepad and few other applications on Linux now.

I do not know much about WINE at the moment. However, I will try to use it more in coming days, and let you all know my experience. If you need more info on WINE, jump to following pages.

So, here is the second part of “Finding the Right Host for your Blog“.

Server Requirements : WordPress server requirements are simple, ( as long as you are planning not to host wordpress MU, or plugins that require additional features and resources ). Lets go straight to wordpress.org, and check out server requirements.

PHP 4.3 or greater
MySQL 4.0 or greater
The mod_rewrite Apache module

If you are too lazy to check this out, wordpress has an email template that you can send to your “would be” host, and then just wait for their answer. Okay, don’t get confused. Most of the webhosts support all these 3 on all of their linux based plans.

Additional features/offers : Now it’s time to check for some additional stuff !! . Do they give you something extra ? like, Google Apps ready ? A free premium theme  ? A collection of themes and plugins ? Free domain name ? contests ? Coupons ? Competition in Webhosting industry is really HUGE. Make use of it, get more features addons and more  !!!

WordPress Friendly ?: It’s not just about support wordpress, and meeting server requirements. It’s about giving you everything that is “WordPress”

A special plan for wordpress hosting ? Support staff with WordPress knowledge ? Separate section in forum and Knowledge base for WordPress and wordpress related issues ? Easy upgrades? ( I am lucky enough to have a host which gets me the latest version through their one click install, on the same day of it’s release)

Finding a good host is easy, but finding the best host is not. With lot of webhosts with almost the same features and offers, you are going to have a tough time finding the best one. Ask friends who host their own website, check forums, ask for feedbck … get to know the company and their policies before you sign up. Make sure they meet your requirements. All the best

ps: I know, you want to know where I host, and why .. stay tuned .. subscribe to my feed …

Here, in the World Wide Web, your IP is your identity . It shows where you are from, which ISP you are using and a lot of other details.( Don’t worry it won’t show your name or address !! )

Whenever you say you are from India, on the web, someone can actually verify if you are really from India. This is useful when people do online transactions. Checking the IP address location, is one way to prevent online fraud.

I will tell you how we use it, at work. Lot of people try to purchase hosting accounts using stolen cards etc.
There are a few countries from where most of them operate. From Wikepedia,

“Whilst internet fraud is widespread, companies providing fraud detection services report higher than normal levels of fraudulent activity from countries such as Venezuela, Ukraine, Indonesia, Yugoslavia, Lithuania, Egypt, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Russia, Pakistan, Malaysia, and Israel. Countries with low reported levels of internet fraud include Austria, New Zealand, Taiwan, Norway, Spain, Japan, Switzerland, South Africa, Hong Kong, the UK, France, and Australia.”

We check the billing address of the card and the IP address location and will see an American signing up for hosting account from South Africa !!. If there are no other signs of fraud on that account ( like an email address which sounds fishy, or the amount they they are paying, or the domain name they used etc ), we send something to verify the account holder. It may be either through email or over the phone. ( Yea, there
are times when Americans go on tour to South Africa right ? )

The Lie Detection Test

Now, lets come back to India. Go to whatismyip.com and it will tell you what your IP is, and now, go here to find out your location and tell me what the result is.

I will tell you what happens when I do this test. My IP says, I am in Bangalore which is 533Km away from where actually I am. Liar !!

Is this really an issue ?

When you sign up for hosting or domain registration, or any other online transactions and payments, you may get marked as fraud and will have to go through a long process of verification. They will tell you, that you are a liar.

Just like newspapers have different editions to serve different Cities or states, websites also can provide you something relevant to your area, by identifying your IP location. Even though I am yet to see any websites doing this in India, ( please let me know if there is any website that already has this feature ) this feature may not work properly if someone wants to try it.

Now, you guys please check the ip and the ip location and tell me if it is showing correctly. Also, please note the name of your ISP too. ( I am using Airtel now. Oh yeea, Tata Indicom is also not bad, they said I am
in Hydrabad, when I was using their Plug 2 Surf.

Buzz" width="307" height="183" align="left" />Update : Click On the Image and see whos there !!

“Yahoo! has launched Yahoo Buzz”. At first, this news did not impress me. The website also looked almost same as any other Yahoo! service. After sometime, I was able to figure out what this Buzz is all about. It sounds almost similar to digg.com. Publishers submit content to the site, users vote for it.

Did you like it ? Well, yes !! I do not know why, but I liked it and I am spending little more time on it. Why … if you ask that question again, I have no other choice but to think and think and give you some …

I like Yahoo! Buzz because …..

I am quite happy with the way yahoo collects and organizes the content from the web. So there is a lot of editorial work being done at Yahoo!’s content team.

Yahoo! search is also involved in this. It can put something on to buzz, when something becomes popular on search. So you get to know what people are looking for. These search terms are updated on a hourly basis.

You do not need to sign up for a buzz account. Just need to sign in using your Yahoo! Id if you have one.

I liked the layout and the user interface of the website

Yahoo! will soon allow me to submit my blog entries too ( well, you just need to wait for that feature .. whats the easy way to do this ? subscribe to my feed lol )

Now, go ahead and check out Yahoo! Buzz and come back here to post your comments. !!

Update : Good news for those who are on WordPress.com, featured posts from wordpress.com homepage are appearing on Buzz, so don’t be shocked if you see a huge traffic from yahoo someday …

I am writing this post with a big question in my mind. It started as soon as I found this new on my RSS feed reader.

On Yahoo! Live, you can use your webcam to broadcast your own live video channel. Or just tune in to other people’s channels. The video and audio are in real time, and as you watch someone’s channel or br

oadcast your own, you can interact chat-room style with other viewers. On Yahoo! Live there are limitless channels and anyone can be a star

Is it really useful ? In someway or the other ? I am yet to find an answer. I don’t think Yahoo! will develop something like this putting a lot of energey effort and money without something in mind. I am unsure of what the real use of this feature is, and I am still trying to figure out if there is any chance for this to be popular ( unless it turns dirty .. you know what I mean, there are lots of chances to get this misused. )

If you think you have an answer for this question that I am asking myself, jump in, drop me a comment !! Don’t you think the are more chances of misuse ? well, Live webcam .. is a hot search engine keyword, you know..

“You’ll find this really weird. Till a couple of hours back, I was all pro-Yahoo. But now, I’m all pro- Gmail. 6+ GB is anyway a lot of space, if you separate all your email accounts, right? And it’s only increasing every single day. There are also other forwarding options available that let you forward your email from one gmail account to another…anyway you must be knowing all this. I’ve never used all these features, until today. Dinsan will be very happy to know that finally I’ve converted to Gmail full time. Haha.”

So, welcome Ruhi………………….

….because they have pop up ads

Okay, I agree that I have ads on my site too. But, I hate pop up ads. So, I hate sites which put pop up ads too. So the sites are aol.in tech2.com and Ibnlive.com

Aol is something that I started visiting quite recently. But tech.com and ibnlive.com, are sites I am visiting daily, for a long time. I love reviews in tech2.com and I am addicted to “being” an interview series in ibnlive.com. But pop up ads make me feel bad … you will go “voww” if you see the amount of ads put on tech2.com these days !!

So, most probably, I will stop visiting them.. or I might think about giving them a second chance, and add those sites to my popup blocked in Firefox .. what you think ? Anyone who love pop up ads uh ?

“There is a little bit of me in AOL mail”. Well, thats true. They have ads too !! like I have on this blog. Is it really bad to have ads ? hmm I would say, No, but when I open my inbox, I am expecting my inbox first and not just ads.

First Impression ?

Yes, opening your mail will not take you directly to your inbox. You see a copy of aol.in’s home page along with some ads. So my first impression was not that good. But it could’een better if they avoided that right – left scroll ( I really hate when I have to scroll left – right on a web page )

Inbox

Inbox looked much better ! As highlighted in those ads, you have delete move etc options on each mail, which is quite innovative and user friendly. You can do the same actions in the traditional way too, ie selection few mails together and then moving it to trash or making unread etc.

It certainly has the cool look, that they concentrate on, throughout the ads.

If you compare it with Yahoo! and Gmail ?

For Gmail, its a NO, it can not reach the Gmail level of user friendly experience and feature list, but it can be a light competitor for Yahoo! mail. But if AOL works more on the user interface, make it less cluttered, and re arrange the homepage of the mail, ( come on guys, concentrate a little here too, not just ads ) it can be a tough competitor for Yahoo! mail.
