HP Announces Android Based Netbook – Compaq Airlife 100

Even though I am more interested in a Chrome OS based netbook now, Android based netbooks are still an interesting news. Companies like HP are still developing android based netbooks, and here is the latest one – Compaq Airlife 100.

It runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz processor and has 512MB if RAM, andÂ a 16GB internal Flash drive.Â Every other feature looks similar toÂ a netbook, including the 10-inch widescreen, 1,024-by-600 resolution,Â card reader, and 28WH battery (3-cell).

Compaq Airlife 100 works with Microsoft Exchange, that means you can have your corporate email account on this netbook. It also has an application for you to view and edit word, excel and powerpoint files. It can handle PDF files too.

The Airlife 100 will be available only in Europe for now. There’s no word on pricing or when it’ll be available in the United States or any other countries.

IfÂ you are interested in testing Android on your own laptop now, you can check out Live Android, a customized android version of laptops and desktop computers. However, I think its better to try Chrome OS, and not android, because both of them are moving in different directions as of now. Android is being developed for mobile phones, and Chrome OS, for laptops or tablets.

I recently tried Chrome Os on my laptop, installing it on my USB drive. You can check this post for more details about it. I have posted some pictures too. I am yet to figure out how to uninstall the OS from my USB drive, and my wife is blaming me for making that drive unusable

Oops ! Started writing about Android, and ended up in Chrome OS ! Sorry Guys Here is a nice little video of the Compaq Airlife 100. HP has put in some good work with the UI, and made the netbook touch screeen. The browser has tabbed browsing, and this always remains connected using 3g.

Google Wave app for iPhone !!

If you are waiting for your google wave account to arrive, let’s have some fun watching a video here. It’s simply an iPhone app for using google wave on your iPhone ( do you have one ? ). It looks interesting !

It’s nice to see the character to character transfer of conversations from a laptop to an iPhone, happening real time. Well, if you are not yet impressed by google wave, this is your turn to be a Google Wave fan !! get ready for that !Â Now, a funny bit, whenever there is an error on this app, this is the message that you see

” Everything’s shiny, Cap,n. Not to fret !” Unfortunately, you’ll need to refresh. Wanna tell Dr. Wave what happened ?

That’s really funny.. isn’t it ? A really cool way to ask you to submit a bug report. This also shows that this app is not quite ready. But the video promises that things will look better byÂ SeptemberÂ 30th. So, wave fans, this thing is getting bigger !!

Having Fun with Windows 7

Finally, I downloaded a copy of windows 7 release candidate, and I am using it right now. Not on my laptop. My laptop is messed up right now, it won’t install any OS at all ( don’t have an windows XP disc with me, but tried fedora, ubuntu and windows 7, all errors … and I am screwed .. time to call acer support guys .. Â ). So I had to install windows 7 on another laptop.

It was real tough downloading a 2GB file ( 64 bit version is 3GB btw ) but airtel’s Speed on Demand helped me out there. So yea, if you ever need help in downloading big files, faster than your normal connection speed, airtel speed on demand is a real good and easy to use service, try it out … and yea, you must pay for this extra speed though.

Windows 7 looks almost like vista, but the start up and the overall design looks good. Try searching google images, for some screenshots. Will be fun, I promise. Â And yea it has vista only in its looks, this thing works way better than vista. I was up and running in less than an hour, and things worked pretty much out of the box, on acer laptop with 2gb ram and intel processor and card.

The good thing is I can use this evaluation copy till may 2010, and after that I will get pop ups asking me to upgrade, and I think this will start shutting down itself every two hours, if I continue to use without upgrading, but till then, I am good.

I installed google chrome, firefox, google talk, and filezilla ( for ftp uploads and downloads ) without any errors. I have a small red icon on my task bar, something called the “action center” asking me to find an anti-virus software online. So, I should look at some anti virus options also. What would you suggest ?

I know this is too much to ask for now, but, still I am really interested to learn this. Installing Android on netbook/laptop that is.

It may take some more time before we actually see Android on Netbooks, and Laptops etc. But, there are some news here and there about people installing Android on their netbooks and nokia phones etc. I am still searching for an article that explains how to do this. ( if you guys know something of that kind, please leave a comment here )

I find tutorials on how to install Google Android SDK ( well it works only on Linux, or Apple’s OSX as of now !! ) but no luck on finding something about installing Android OS itself.

Reading Books, Staying Online, and it Works !!

Staying online and reading books, that’s the new technique that I am testing.Why ?

I tried several times to stay offlineÂ to read more books. But,Â twitter, blogs, google reader, comments, chats, orkut, facebook, oh no !! I leave the book there and come back, every time. Do you think I am addicted to blogging or internet in general ? well, I think so ..Â and I have started missing books.

Taste some “WINE”

Hmm … thinking what I am up to ? okay, I had the same confusion when I found newsÂ ” Wine 1.4 released” etc on digg.com. After that confusion, I read ….. WINE is an opensource project for Linux operating systems, which will help you run Windows applications on your Linux computer. Awesome !!

I did install WINE on my Linuxed laptop, and tried to install Chrome on it. However, it did not work since the Google Chrome file for this was not available for download for some reason. It gave me a “404 not found” error. But, I can use notepad and few other applications on Linux now.

I do not know much about WINE at the moment. However, I will try to use it more in coming days, and let you all know my experience. If you need more info on WINE,Â jump to following pages.

Hi, Ubuntu !!!

Hi Ubuntu, this is my first blog post with you. You look so cute !! (Â but, I know I can not judge your personality from the way you look like, I need to know youÂ more, before I can decide if you qualify as my best friend. But let me tell you, first impression was very good. )

One of my friends, Binny V A helped me to get you installed on my laptop. You wereÂ friendly and helpful from the first step the very last one.

I am not really new to Linux and open source, I know your brother Fedora forÂ 3 years and weÂ are still good friends ( we meet every day at office ).

Yes, installation was easy, but I had to spend hours to correct the screen resolution issue. Finally, got it fixed, ( by 3 in the morning btw ) and now, you look really beautiful.

I hope you enjoy my blog and laptop !!

Google’s Own Browser : Chrome – First Impression

Google released their very own open source browser today. I was eagerly waiting for it’s release like many others, because, we expect the best from Google.. right ? IÂ kept reloading the browser tab on Chrome’s URL, but it gave 404, not found error all the time, and finally, google reader sent me the official release post. Or if you go to google.com, you will see an announcement there too.

Installation was pretty easy. Click “Download”, Agree to TOS, and then, wait for few moments to get it installed.

So, Google Chrome is ready on my Laptop. Let us test it now. First website ? Okay, we will try, gmail.com. Was it fast enough ? YES !! Google Chrome works little faster than firefox. But that was just my first impression ok ?

Google Chrome has a lot of new features to offer. Like, the way of tab design, ( you can drag your tab away and make it a new window itself ) etc. If you need a full list of new features, go here.
